The UK Treasury Committee is currently seeking evidence for ‘sexism in the city’, following the 2018 report, Women in Finance. The Committee is welcoming evidence from women working in, or having worked in, financial services. Here at WIBF we want to support our members as well as gather experiences and insights from our community. Anna Lane writes…

I recently shared my thoughts on LinkedIn about some deeply concerning allegations swirling in our industry, reflecting a toxic culture that has, unfortunately, permeated parts of the financial sector for too long. As your CEO, I feel an immense responsibility to not only acknowledge these challenges but to actively engage in the process of change.

The financial services sector stands at a crossroads. While it’s troubling to hear about such issues within our industry, it’s essential to see this moment as an opportunity — an opportunity to challenge and change outdated systems and mentalities. The question remains: are we doing enough to ensure a truly inclusive, respectful, and safe environment for everyone?

It’s clear that there’s so much more to be done. Addressing these challenges isn’t the responsibility of just a handful of leaders or organisations. This is a collective effort. Each of us, from individual members to corporations, from regulators to government entities, has a part to play in this transformative journey.

In response to the pressing need for action, the Treasury Committee has initiated a new inquiry into “Sexism in the City.” This inquiry will delve into critical issues such as the gender pay gap, the role of firms in countering misogyny, and the pivotal role that government and regulators can and should play in establishing a safer environment for women in finance.

Your Voice Matters
As part of the WIBF community, your voice, experiences, and insights are invaluable. We need to ensure that the Treasury Committee hears from a diverse range of individuals who can provide a holistic understanding of the challenges faced and the solutions required. The Committee would particularly welcome evidence from women working in, or having worked in, financial services, the link is here.

If you wish to engage with the WIBF in responding to the committee’s call for evidence, or if you’re considering sharing your personal experiences for us to include in a WIBF wide response, please fill out this form. Please be assured we will treat your comments with the utmost confidentiality.

In Conclusion
These times challenge us, but they also present us with a unique chance to reshape the industry for the better. Let’s harness this opportunity, stand together, and drive the change we wish to see.

Warm Regards,

Anna Lane
