John visited us in October 2019, and everyone agreed that his “No Bull Newsroom” was one of the liveliest and enjoyable workshops we’d had in a long time. His instantly implementable takeaways that were really relevant to us in the corporate financial world with Brexit approaching.
There were no text heavy slides or theory. Instead, John used a wide range of amusing and heart-stopping video clips from news bulletins. They revealed what was going on behind the scenes as news bulletins went out on air, enabling John to share the ‘newsroom secrets’ that journalists on tight deadlines know to help them make quick decisions, hold agile meetings, and communicate fast.
We were then able to put this into practice in a range of simulated news games, having to decide on story running orders, as breaking news caused disruption that needed solving! At the end, the bravest of us were able to put their courage to the test by reading their own news headlines, in front of the room, off his portable news camera and autocue.
It struck us as the perfect blend of challenging and relevant learning — with a lot of fun.
