The power of volunteering – Anna Lane
news published date 7 June 2024Here we are, halfway through the year!
June isn’t just a busy month for Women in Banking and Finance (WIBF); it’s a moment to pause and celebrate our remarkable achievements. None of this would be possible without recognising and thanking our extraordinary volunteers.
National Volunteers Week is our opportunity to join the nation in acknowledging the invaluable contributions of millions of volunteers. This week highlights their profound impact on communities and organisations.
The Power of Volunteering
“Volunteers are the backbone of our society. Their contributions go far beyond the time they give, fostering community spirit and creating lasting change.”
-Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson
Volunteering is more than just an act of kindness. It’s about creating a ripple effect that fosters social cohesion, supports community development, and encourages active citizenship. Volunteers bring people together, fostering understanding and cooperation, key elements of a harmonious society. The socio-economic contribution of volunteers is immense, with an estimated value of £19-£20 billion annually, sustaining numerous non-profits and community groups.
On a personal level, volunteering offers unmatched benefits. It’s an opportunity for personal growth, skill development, and enhanced employability. It helps build new friendships and expand social networks, which are crucial for emotional support and well-being. Most importantly, it provides a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment.
“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”
-Elizabeth Andrew
Volunteering and WIBF’s Mission

At WIBF, our mission is clear: to actively grow the talent pipeline of professional women at every career stage within the banking and finance sector. We are driven by volunteers who help us share best practices in diversity and inclusion, provide networking and development opportunities, and support women’s career advancement. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation, ensuring that we continue to make strides in promoting gender equality in financial services.
I want to personally thank all our volunteers for their dedication and effort. Your commitment ensures that WIBF continues to thrive and make a difference.
During this National Volunteers Week, let’s celebrate the spirit of volunteering and encourage more people to get involved. Whether it’s developing new skills, making new friends, or contributing to the betterment of society, volunteering offers countless benefits.
