On 29th May, we held a Business Breakfast event presented by Carly Sutherland, hosted by Kent Mackenzie of Deloitte in Edinburgh.

Carly is responsible for Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and Innovation programmes for RBS Personal and Business Banking. Since joining RBS in 2011, Carly has taken a varied path to reach this role, including a number of roles across regulatory programmes, risk, restructuring, and Digital.

Carly gave us insight into the context of Artificial Intelligence and how the interaction of Big Data, Cloud technology, robotics and new user interfaces are creating the 4th industrial revolution. There were some interesting anecdotes and statistics such as…

“Voice will start to replace touchscreens and keyboards as the digital user interface of choice in 2018… By 2020, 50 per cent of online search will be conducted by voice, compared to 20 per cent in 2017”

After a myriad of questions about transferable skill sets, impact on the regulatory environment and the ethics involved, it was clear this hot topic may warrant further sessions.
