A popular misnomer is the concept of having a sponsor OR a mentor. For many years, a sponsor or a mentor has been the ‘must have’ for any aspiring executive. But how do you obtain one? Who should it be and what will they do? Who is advocating for you on those crucial promotion panels?

Almost every key decision about your future career, including annual appraisal ratings and pay decisions will take place when you are not even in the room. To fulfil your career aspirations and potential, you will need both sponsors AND mentors. This may mean applying a variety of personal approaches to open up opportunities in this post-pandemic hybrid world. Once attained, you will need to form an agreement with your sponsor and mentor and control what you want them to do – ultimately, driving your desired career outcomes.
