The menopause affects every woman, it’s more common than pregnancy, yet it has been shrouded in silence, especially at work.

Most women experience some symptoms which affect their performance or comfort at work, for a minority their menopause has a profound affect on their work, yet few workplaces provide any menopause policy or any education for managers.

Rachel Weiss, founder of Menopause Café, will talk about how Menopause Café started in Perth 2 years ago, how it’s spread throughout the UK, including Menopause Café at Work and how it spawned the world’s only Menopause Festival.

Then we’ll hold our own Menopause Café: a group-directed discussion about the menopause, not promoting any particular course of action, product or service, but allowing you to discuss any aspect of the menopause which is of interest to you.

Forewarned is forearmed, so Rachel especially encourages younger members to attend this event. You may not be experiencing symptoms yourself right now, but you most likely work with and/or manage women who do.

Rachel Weiss is a partner at Rowan Consultancy in Perth. She is an accredited counsellor and coach, and an engaging speaker, an speaks regularly at WIBF events.

In 2017 Rachel watched Kirsty Wark’s documentary The Menopause and Me and realised that she knew very little about the menopause, despite it being imminent for her, and that she hardly ever heard people talking about it – beyond the odd joke about hot flushes. So she decided to set up event where people could talk about the menopause, if they so wished. These pop-up events proved so popular, that Menopause Café became a registered charity, with Kirsty Wark as patron.

At Menopause Cafes, people, often strangers, meet to drink tea, eat cake and talk menopause. Theses are proving very popular in the workplace, where employers are beginning to realise the importance of being menopause-supportive if they wish to attract, support and retain female workers.
