WIBF Glasgow were delighted to partner with the ‘Dress for Success’ charity and be part of the investment in a woman’s future, where the suit is just the beginning of how they help women succeed in work and in life each year. This event offered the chance to donate suits, jackets, blouses, trousers/skirts, handbags and shoes to support economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire.

The night’s proceedings started with Maria Dickson, member of the WIBF Glasgow Board. Maria thanked our members who donated graciously for the cause and introduced the main speaker.

Iain MacDonald, our esteemed speaker and Morgan Stanley Learning & Development Manager within the Human Resources function, provided guidance on how to cultivate our Personal Brand in order to achieve career advancement. Iain spoke about perception versus reality, the importance of authenticity and self-awareness and touched upon common derailers who could jeopardize our efforts when constructing and promoting our personal brand. By asking the simple question “what’s in it for me?” Iain summed up the golden rules of creating your brand: consistency, substance, network, being personable and being proactive. Referencing Scott Ginsberg, the famous TedTalks speaker and Jeff Bezos, of Amazon fame, Iain focused on the lessons to be learnt and finished the night by asking attendees “Do you know what your brand is?”

Some quotes from our members who attended the event:

“It’s very difficult to establish your personal brand, having the right people around you to give you honest feedback can be of huge help”

“Most people are concerned with whether their perception of themselves is the reality that others see”

“Dress for success is such a good cause to get women back into work and Is crucial as it helps build their confidence to do so.”

All attendees walked away with a free goody bag as a thank you for their donations. The gift bags were kindly sponsored by Rainbow Room International (RRI). Founded in 1979 by Alan and Linda Stewart, Rainbow Room International (RRI) is Scotland’s largest hairdressing group. With eleven luxurious salons based in Glasgow, Ayr and Stirling and an award winning training academy in the heart of Glasgow, RRI was hailed Scottish Hairdresser of the Year 2017 for the second year running at the prestigious British Hairdressing Awards.

The night was enjoyed at one of our regular venues, the private Screening Room at the wonderfully swanky Blythswood Hotel, where our members, hailing from all walks of achievement in academia, business and industry, enjoyed drinks and a chat before and after the event. This was a perfect opportunity for networking in a friendly and relaxed environment, with members of the Glasgow WIBF board on hand to make introductions where needed.
