We were delighted to welcome members to our Ethical Fashion & Networking evening last Tuesday in Covent Garden, marking our first ever London Fashion Week celebration. Thanks to the finance world’s myriad of written and unwritten office dress codes our members are already a pretty stylish bunch, but with sustainability now firmly on the agenda we were keen to explore the impact that the clothing choices of City women were making on the world.

Our ethical and sustainable designers for the night came from the Lone Design Club, and consisted of new and establish clothing and jewellery designers who were all working to incorporate socially responsible, planet friendly, and cruelty free practices into their designs. Members kicked off the evening by browsing the rails whilst enjoying Lanique cocktails and nibbles, before gathering to hear the designers talk about their brands. They revealed the shocking levels of pollution and poor working conditions that are generated by most brands, and the huge challenges facing young designers who want to follow more ethical practices. The talked ended on a lighter note with tips on how to bring personal touches to corporate looks, and suggestions for ethical wardrobe updates at work. Members also took home goody bags with Dermatologica skincare products to try.

Turns out that corporate attire really isn’t such a bad thing after all. A well tailored suit can last years if treated well, and a decent set of staple shirts and bottoms is the perfect ‘slow fashion’ choice for buying fewer clothes overall. We have means in the City to spend a bit more on ethical fashion choices, and is another great way we can contribute to a better world.
