Distinguished Speakers Mini Series: In Conversation With Dr. Rhian-Mari Thomas OBE
We are delighted to welcome our next guest in the Women in Banking & Finance Distinguished Speakers Mini Series.
Dr. Rhian-Mari Thomas OBE is Chief Executive of the Green Finance Institute. Rhian will join Vivienne Artz, President of WIBF, in conversation on Tuesday 24th November at 12.30pm.
This series features high profile executives from across the financial services sector who have diversity and inclusion at the forefront of their business agenda. These short, sharp, virtual events will give an insight into the current hot topics that are occupying senior business leaders and will offer participants the opportunity to pose questions.
In this session, Rhian will share her thoughts on COVID-19 and her key insights from this unsettling period. She will discuss how COVID-19 has affected the green agenda and shifted the focus to a green recovery. We will discuss the role of finance in tackling the environmental challenges we face, what we can all do in our daily lives and how climate impacts disproportionately affect women across the globe.

About Dr. Rhian-Mari:
Dr. Rhian-Mari Thomas was awarded an OBE for services to green banking and was appointed chief executive of the UK Government and City of London Corporation-backed Green Finance Institute in 2019. She is Chair of the Green Finance Institute’s Coalition for the Energy Efficiency of Buildings.
Rhian was previously the global head of green banking and the founder and chair of Barclays Green Banking Council, which developed and launched Barclays’ suite of green finance products and services. These include issuance of the first green bond by a UK bank backed solely by UK assets, the first green mortgage by a major UK high street lender and establishing Barclays as the first commercial bank with a full green corporate banking proposition to complement Barclays’ existing green bond origination capabilities.
Rhian is an Emeritus Member of the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). She also previously sat on the UK Government Green Finance Taskforce, the Banking Environment Initiative’s Fintech Taskforce and the steering group for the United Nations Environment Programme Principles for Responsible Banking.
Rhian is a commissioner for the Commission for Carbon Charging, a member of the Global Advisory Council for Oxford University’s Sustainable Finance Programme and an Advisor to the UK Government’s Climate Finance Accelerator programme. Rhian began her banking career at Barclays Investment Bank in 2000, spending 10 years in leveraged finance and financial sponsors coverage before holding a succession of leadership roles across Barclays Corporate Bank and Barclaycard.
She is a passionate advocate of diversity and fairness and was awarded the Barclays Woman of the Year award 2014/15 in recognition of her efforts to support the inclusion agenda both within the bank and the broader community. In both 2016 and 2017, Rhian was ranked in the Financial Times Outstanding Top 30 Global Executive LGBT Allies list.
A fluent Welsh speaker, Rhian holds a PhD in Physics from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
