Event overview

Sir Sandy Crombie will discuss lessons learned from his career spanning 5 decades in business.

Bookings are closed for this event.

Women in Banking and Finance were privileged that Sir Sandy Crombie was our high profile speaker in February. Sir Sandy had a long career with Standard Life, from which he retired as Group Chief Executive in 2009, so it was fitting that our event was host by Aberdeen Standard Life.

Sir Sandy’s Board positions have been varied and his insights spanned his executive career plus his time as Independent Director of RBS. Sir Sandy also holds a wide variety of positions including President of the Cockburn Association Council, Trustee of the Ross Development Trust, a Board member of Edinburgh Business School, Chairman of Amiqus, Chairman of Creative Scotland and Vice Chairman of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

It was highlighted that whilst gender balance remains critical, true diversity will only be achieved when there is diversity of thought , therefore be yourself and bring your own integrity and experience to a role. Resilience during change was also a key theme and the link to culture was explored. Culture is difficult to define and measure but is a combination of purpose, principles, policies, procedures and practices. Change within a company must consider these elements from the employee and shareholder positions.

Åsa Norrie, Senior Director Global Strategic Alliances at Aberdeen Standard Investments explained the importance of the Diversity and Inclusion agenda following the merger of the asset management firms and the continued progress being made.

Our guests had the opportunity to ask questions of our speaker and network with guests from across financial services whilst contemplating how to put the quote below into practice…

Nae harder job to mortals has been gi’en”
