Women in Banking & Finance invites you to their Women on Board’s Forum joint event with the Appointments Commission with keynote speakers, Anne Watts CBE and Jim Pringle, the Appointments Commission and guest speakers currently serving on NHS Boards, Patricia Williamson & Penny McCulloch.
The event provides an opportunity to hear from the Appointments Commission about several pilot programmes to attract more senior business women on to NHS boards to bring financial knowledge and commercial expertise to Board debate and be part of transformational change.
The pilots are:
Talent pool development;
End of term career planning; and
Reciprocal shadowing
The NHS of England is currently working on an exciting transformation programme which will result in the formation of business units at the heart of every NHS Trust. This has created excellent opportunities to appoint NEDs with proven commercial skills.
WIBF is delighted to have Anne Watts CBE, Chair of the Appointments Commission, Jim Pringle who is responsible for partnership working and increasing membership of women on to NHS boards. WIBF will also be joined by two guest speakers who are currently serving on NHS Boards to share their experiences. The event will expose you to various opportunities across the NHS and, therefore, would be a great opportunity for you to learn more about potential posts you could apply for and the subsquent professional guidance you will receive firsthand.

Baroness Margaret Ford
Baroness Ford joined Royal Bank of Canada’s Capital Markets Group, in November 2007, as a Managing Director in the Bank’s Global Infrastructure Team. She leads the Social Infrastructure Team, which covers housing, regeneration and real estate.
Margaret is a highly experienced non-executive director and, for over ten years, has chaired high profile, public bodies including English Partnerships and Lothian Health Board. She is a non-executive director of Serco Group plc, Grainger Plc as well as a Senior Adviser to the Stockland Corporation – Australia’s leading developer.
In 2006 Margaret was elevated to the Peerage as Baroness Ford of Cunninghame.
About the Speakers
Anne Watts CBE
Anne Watts was appointed as Chair of the Appointments Commission from 1st April 2007. She is currently Chair of the Independent Panel on race equality for the NHS and for the last two years has been employer’s representative on the steering group for the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights. For over 25 years, she has been a leading figure in diversity, recruitment and workplace development issues, with a strong track record across the private, public and voluntary sectors. Anne has also held executive roles relating to workforce and diversity in Business in the Community, HSBC and NatWest Bank.
Jim Pringle
Jim joined the Appointments Commission in July 2007 on secondment from British Telecom where he was Director of Business Sales. During a long career with BT initially as a Radio Engineer covering the Western Isles of Scotland through to becoming one of their senior directors having worked worldwide.
He was tasked to lead a commercial project to attract senior management talent pools from large commercial companies specifically targeting senior business women. After a period of nine months, he left BT and became an independent contractor with the Appointments Commission. During the last fifteen months, he has secured the participation of thirty two large companies and over two hundred candidates of which twenty six have been appointed as Non-Executive Directors for the NHS.
Two NED Speakers:
Patricia Williamson
Patricia became an NED for Ealing Hospital Trust in March 2008, as a result of Guardian Media Group support for the Appointments Commission’s initiative to increase the number of commercially experienced NEDs in the NHS.
In commercial life, Patricia has worked as an HR Director in organisations as varied as Calor Gas, Barclays Asset and Sales Finance and Trader Media Group, a subsidiary business of Guardian Media Group. She also spent two years as the Chief Operating Officer of Barclays Asset and Sales Finance. In these roles Patricia has focussed on organisational effectiveness and business transformation, and has been involved in business restructuring, relocation, acquisitions and disposals in addition to leading and managing the delivery of the full range of HR and OD business support activities.
Penny McCulloch
Penny McCulloch joined Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust on 1 November 2007 as a Non Executive Director and Chair of the Audit Committee. During the time, Penny has been in post the Trust has been through the process of applying for Foundation Trust status.
Penny is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Practitioner with over 10 years commercial experience in FTSE100 companies specialising in Telecommunications. During this time Penny spent two years based in the Far East reviewing business development opportunities. She joined BT Plc nearly three years ago and works in Global Services as Transformation Director, Supply Chain. Penny is currently leading on the cost transformation workstream aiming to reduce the spend base of c£2bn with external third parties. Penny was previously the Chief Financial Officer of a start up company formed by four of the largest mobile phone operators.
