ImageWhat are the unconscious ways women undermine or sabotage their careers? Interviews of 1000 female executives in 2010 (from top US Fortune 500 organisations) found the top 3 were: 1. Work too hard 2. Do the work of others/take on low profile assignments 3. Fail to capitalise on relationships or follow them up Increasing your visibility is not just about hard work. The people who are noticed and remembered do so by adding extra value – to the report, at the meeting and in their work relationships. We will explore behaviours that may hinder your progress rather than help you get noticed. Do you speak softly? Speak last at meetings? Wait to be assigned tasks or ask permission before you do something that might be out of your job role? Find yourself apologising for what you do or before you speak? How firm is your handshake? Do you smile when you are uncomfortable? Believe that by playing fair you will get ahead? What are the behaviours that set you apart? How can you capitalise on these behaviours for greater success? Women are highly valued in many businesses because they: • Adopt a more measured approach to decision making and require more data • Are more naturally collaborative and consultative • Are more risk adverse • Are less wasteful of resources • Embrace change, and adapt better to new situations • Are stronger on relationship management and communication skills • Are more likely to delegate, and are better managers because of this • Make better leaders through transformational periods • Create less rigid, hierarchical work cultures centred on value In this workshop we will explore ways to use the abilities that come naturally to women, behaviours that not only increase your visibility, but will also help you take the right steps to progress your career. By the end of the workshop you will have a plan. We will identify the where, which, why, when and how – the steps that will raise your profile and get you noticed. • Where: perform well or excellently in current role • Which: take on perceived high value tasks only • Why: be clear how the task will help you progress • When: ring fence the amount of time the task needs • How: you will communicate this extra work/activity to those people you want to know about it Jan Floyd-Douglass works with organisations on their female leadership capability development and 'balanced boards' strategies and programmes.
